Security Systems for R2 Certification

If you’re working on a Responsible Recycling Certification (R2), you are probably already of aware the standards for environmental impact and data privacy. But have you considered whether your physical security systems are up to the challenge?

The R2 certification includes standards for handling hazardous materials, device chains of custody, and documentation. These standards have big implications for alarms, sensors, access control, and surveillance.

The security implications are straightforward, but not always obvious. Electronic devices are value dense and are often targeted for theft, both petty and organized. In fact, electronics are often categorized in the security space as “HVTTs” - High Value, Targeted for Theft items. The loss of a single device or file with sensitive data - like personal photos or banking information - can cause significant legal and financial trouble for the organization that lost it. That’s to say nothing of second-order impacts, such as a loss of consumer confidence in the recycling ecosystem, which will lead to fewer recycled devices and greater environmental damage.

Your own records and documentation also need to protected. These are common attack vectors for sophisticated actors who seek to understand your programs and identify weak spots.

During your audit, your R2 auditor will want to see that access to key facilities is controlled. Server rooms, file cabinets, and device-handling areas will need to be secured to allow access only by authorized parties. Auditors may want to see detailed access logs. Surveillance cameras should cover entry and exit points and any device-handling areas, especially those where data sanitization or repackaging take place. Cameras help provide deterrence and establish chain of custody documentation.

Your facility should have strong anti-theft deterrents. Restricted zones, audible alarms for doors or line crossing, metal detectors, and - sometimes - even guard staff can be used.

For facilities that handle large quantities of dangerous items, such as batteries or CRT monitors, systems to monitor temperature and air quality can help provide assurance that safety standards are being met, that no environmental release is occurring, and that any incidents will be identified and remediated immediately.

A security systems partner with experience in R2-certified facilities can help make sure you address key needs without overpaying. If you are building a facility, involving us at the design stage is recommended. If you already have a facility and a security system, we still recommend you get us involved as early as possible. That way, we can identify key gaps early on and help avoid costly delays associated with repeated audits.
